Y’ALL…
It’s taken me a minute and a lot of behind the scenes logistics-navigating, but I am thrilled to announce the launch of my new podcast: Jess Klein’s Big Table. This pod will feature conversations with fellow artists and activists about the intersections between ancestors, art, and activism. Questions to be explored will include: Who and where do we come from? What lineages and forebears do we draw upon, biological and otherwise, for inspiration and strength in our creative and social justice work?
This graphic links to a teaser episode where I talk about the inspiration behind the podcast and what you can expect from it:
The graphic above links to Apple Podcasts, but you can also listen on Spotify and YouTube.
My aim here is to help build community and connection among and between artists and activists, because if there’s one thing everyone I know and admire is talking about, it’s about how we must build community to move through these crazy times. It’s not about waiting for a hero to swoop in. We must be the heroes. As many Black and Brown activists have been saying forever, “We take care of us.”
I also want to inspire y’all to embrace creativity in your activism and activism in your creativity.
And to pose questions like: “What do we need to reckon with in our own past, our own ancestry - and how that shaped us - in order to fully show up for this moment?” You know, light hearted chatter; not loaded at all.
Honestly though, I’m not a small talk kind of gal (you knew that from my music, right?) so here we are.
There’s a loud voice in my head right now saying, “I’VE NEVER DONE ANYTHING LIKE THIS BEFORE” because I haven’t. I’ve had 30 years to wear my groove into how to write a song, how to get onstage, how to find inspiration in the studio, how to tour while exhausted, how to promote a show, etc, etc.
This is different. It’s an opportunity for me to share some of the brilliant people I know and their ideas with you. It’s about creative community exploring important questions, some of them perhaps unanswerable. Mostly it’s my attempt to show up to this moment we’re in and not shy away. I want to make the world a better place, and songs are only one way to do that.
Please subscribe to the podcast, like it, share it, and I’ll look forward to sharing the first full episode with you Friday 9/13!
