Wow! Huge John Stewart and Richard Shindell fan here! You sound great. Very much appreciate the use of “funky”! (Also, in John’s original lyrics, “the shaving razor’s OLD and it stings.”) Very impressed that Richard found the politically incorrect version 😆 Made my day!
Yes! I noticed that too. I don’t know where we got “cold” from, but for some reason it made sense. The use of “funky” really seems key to the song’s meaning; I don’t know why they changes it.
John Stewart frequently told the story on stage and in interviews that Chip Douglas insisted that the executives wouldn’t let Davey sing “funky” and would only buy the song if John would approve the “happy” lyric, which he reluctantly agreed to. I heard Davy Jones say, after John’s death and shortly before his own, that it was he who suggested and insisted on the lyric change. So, I guess that was just Chip’s way of getting John on board, and God only knows why Davey thought happy was better than funky.
"Daydream Believer" has one of those never-ending memories for me. I was at the end of first, 2nd, or 3rd grade when our schoolyear ended with a field trip to Rye Playland, just over the bridge from western Long Island where we lived. And there was a girl from one of the other classes who I had a crush on, and I saw her enjoying a buggy-whip ride while The Monkees hit played on the speakers (it had been a hit in the year before.) The opening tinkling piano perfectly matched my young affection for that girl as her hair whipped back and forth (a bob cut, as I recall).
Oooh, more midwesty shows! Hope I can get the time off for the MO shows, but either way, I'll see you in IA. That's right before I have a week off for some Poltz shows, so adding you to the trips will be nice!

The Jones’ version definitely sounds like cold, but, course that makes no sense, though I sang it that way for years. 😉
Davey definitely sings “cold.”

I just came here to say the same thing, Del!
Well definitely correct that next time!
You will make so many John Stewart fans so happy😆

What a great story and visual!
Oh yeah, and it was an early summer feel, so the warm air near the Long Island Sound just added to the senses.

I just cannot stay away! That’ll be a treat, to see you again! Having you at shows makes it better!
Well...can't get the time off for MO, so we'll just have to settle for Iowa!
Shower intuition is real! That's where I get my biggest and best ideas, submerged in water or in the shower. Dunno why, but it works.
